Artist Statement
Every location I paint is significant to me. I know these places so well, they are etched in my consciousness. I live in a region that presents wildly diverse landscapes and offers my imagination infinite ways to translate them into a range of keys or themes. That being said, the painting is never just about a location, per se; rather, that location becomes a tool I use to fulfill a particular series I am working on at that time.
I am an avid student of early 20th-century American landscape painters. My strongest influences are Tryon, Twachtman, and Whistler and their sensitive, delicate, high-key palettes. I work in series of pieces, each with a common thread of subject matter, palette theme, or value key. This allows me to explore the landscape and push color and space beyond traditional representation. My current obsession is developing a sense of space and place using limited tools of color and value in straightforward compositions, visually articulating an emotional connection to my environment.
