Artist Biography
“When I was a child, it seems I didn’t talk very much. My father would tell me that when he looked into my eyes to see if anyone was in there, he could almost hear the wheels turning. What was I thinking? I have no idea, but I guess that I was practicing to listen and observe. Developing this third eye was key to my growth as an artist, and it is what fuels my pursuit to document everyday life. My goal is to paint the seemingly ordinary in an unordinary way.”
“I became a professional artist after years of working in the food industry as a chef; one day I realized I needed another creative outlet and could no longer play nice with the other kids. I began utilizing the art background that I had and resumed a previously abandoned endeavor—painting. I painted from pictures in a corner of my house, but soon realized I needed more stimuli. I wasn’t achieving the energy and colors that I envisioned. I began traveling and painting en plein air, and I knew this is what it’s all about. Today I still paint in my studio and often from photographs, but to have sipped the wine and smelled the aromas of the cafe I am painting or ridden in the gondola in the Grand Canal has changed the way I paint. Now don’t get me wrong—a painting of the Tennessee countryside or people at a bus stop is just as interesting to me, but it’s getting out and experiencing what I am painting that inspires my work today.”
